Joy has dawned upon the world, Promised from creation— God’s salvation now unfurled, Hope for ev’ry nation. Not with fanfares from above, Not with scenes of glory, But a humble gift of love— Jesus born of Mary. Sounds of wonder fill the sky With the songs of angels As the mighty Prince of Life Shelters in a stable. Hands that set each star in place, Shaped the earth in darkness, Cling now to a mother’s breast, Vuln’rable and helpless. Shepherds bow before the Lamb, Gazing at the glory; Gifts of men from distant lands Prophesy the story. Gold—a King is born today, Incense—God is with us, Myrrh—His death will make a way, And by His blood He’ll win us. Son of Adam, Son of heaven, Given as a ransom; Reconciling God and man, Christ, our mighty champion! What a Savior! What a Friend! What a glorious myst’ry! Once a babe in Bethlehem, Now the Lord of hist’ry.

Jesus, Savior, pilot me Over life’s tempestuous sea; Unknown waves before me roll, Hiding rock and treacherous shoal. Chart and compass come from Thee; Jesus, Savior, pilot me. Chart and compass come from Thee; Jesus, Savior, pilot me. Though the sea be smooth and bright, Sparkling with the stars of night, And my ship’s path be ablaze With the light of halcyon days, Still I know my need of Thee; Jesus, Savior, pilot me. Still I know my need of Thee; Jesus, Savior, pilot me. As a mother stills her child, Thou canst hush the ocean wild; Boisterous waves obey Thy will, When Thou sayest to them, "Be still!" Wondrous sovereign of the sea, Jesus, Savior, pilot me. Wondrous sovereign of the sea, Jesus, Savior, pilot me. When at last I near the shore, And the fearful breakers roar ’Twixt me and the peaceful rest, Then, while leaning on Thy breast, May I hear Thee say to me, "Fear not, I will pilot thee." May I hear Thee say to me, "Fear not, I will pilot thee."

Psalm 51 01:33
Against You, You only, O Lord, have I sinned. For I know my transgressions And ask to be cleansed. Create in me a pure heart O Lord, renew my soul! Restore to me the joy of Your salvation!
4.
All we, like sheep, have gone astray— We have turned, ev'ry one, to his own way. And the Lord has laid on Him The iniquity of us all, The iniquity of us all.
5.
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, And my spirit exalts in God, my Savior. For He has look'd with favor on my lowliness, And my name shall be forever call'd blessed. For the Mighty God has done great things for me, And His mercy extends from age to age. And holy, holy, holy is His name! He has mercy in ev'ry generation, He has revealed His power and His glory. He has cast down the mighty in their arrogance, And has lifted up the meek and the lowly. He has come to help His servant, Israel, And remember'd His promise to our fathers. And holy, holy, holy is His name!
6.
Come, Thou Fount of ev'ry blessing Tune my heart to sing Thy grace! Streams of mercy, never ceasing, Call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet Sung by flaming tongues above. Praise the mount, I'm fix'd upon it— Mount of Thy redeeming love. Oh, to grace how great a debtor Daily I'm constrain'd to be! Let that goodness like a fetter Bind my wand'ring heart to Thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love! Here's my heart, oh, take and seal it; Seal it for Thy courts above. Oh, that day when freed from sinning I shall see Thy lovely face! Clothed then in the blood-washed linen, How I'll sing Thy wondrous grace. Come, my Lord, no longer tarry, Take my ransomed soul away! Send Thine angels now to carry Me to realms of endless day.

8.
Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side. Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain. Leave to thy God to order and provide; In every change He faithful will remain. Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly friend, Through thorny ways, leads to a joyful end. Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake To guide the future as he has the past. Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake; All now mysterious shall be bright at last. Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know His voice who ruled them while he dwelt below. Be still, my soul, when dearest friends depart, And all is darkened in the vale of tears. Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart, Who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears. Be still my soul: Thy Jesus can repay From His own fullness all He takes away. Be still my soul: the hour is hast'ning on When we shall be forever with the Lord. When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored. Be still my soul: when change and tears are past; All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

Rock of Ages 03:39
Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in thee; Let the water and the blood, From thy wounded side which flowed, Be of sin the double cure; Cleanse me from its guilt and pow'r. Not the labors of my hands Can fulfill thy law's demands; Could my zeal no respite know, Could my tears forever flow, All for sin could not atone; Thou must save, and thou alone. Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to the cross I cling; Naked, come to thee for dress; Helpless, look to thee for grace; Foul, I to the fountain fly; Wash me, Savior, or I die. While I draw this fleeting breath, When mine eyes shall close in death, When I soar to worlds unknown, See thee on thy judgment throne, Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee.
10.
Come and see, look on this mystery: The Lord of the universe, nailed to a tree! Christ, our God, spilling His Holy blood, Bowing in anguish His sacred head. Sing to Jesus, Lord of our shame; Lord of our sinful hearts; He is our great redeemer! Sing to Jesus, honor His name; Sing of His faithfulness; pouring His life out unto death. Come you weary, and He will give you rest. Come you who mourn, lay on His breast. Christ who died, risen in Paradise; Giver of mercy, Giver of life. Sing to Jesus, His is the throne; Now and forever, He is the King of Heaven! Sing to Jesus, we are His own; Now and forever, sing for the love our God has shown! Sing to Jesus, Lord of our shame; Lord of our sinful hearts; He is our great redeemer! Sing to Jesus, honor His name... Sing to Jesus, His is the throne; Now and forever, He is the King of Heaven! Sing to Jesus, we are His own; Now and forever, sing for the love our God has shown!

Isaiah 40 03:42
Do you not know? Have you not heard That the Lord is the Everlasting God? The creator of the ends of the earth; He will not grow tired or weary. And His understanding: no one can fathom! He gives strength to the weary, And increases the power of the weak. Why do you say, O Jacob, and complain, O Israel, "My way is hidden from the Lord!" Why do you say, O Jacob, and complain, O Israel, "My cause is disregarded by my God"? Even youths grow tired and weary, Young men stumble and fall. Even youths grow tired and weary, Young men stumble and fall. But those who hope in the Lord shall renew their strength! They were soar on wings, wings like eagles! They will run and not, not grow weary. They will walk and not, not grow faint. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

about

The Princeton Sessions is an album of songs we sang or helped produce as part of the rich musical life of Princeton's Christian community. The highlights of our musical year were the two annual inter-fellowship services, one at Christmas and one on Good Friday. These songs were performed and arranged for those services, or sung in a weekly group meeting (at PCF, Princeton Christian Fellowship). Jamie Rankin, a professor in the German department, is the musical leader of the Vespers services, and we are much indebted to his talent and musical expertise in creating this album--in large part because most of the arrangements, as well as some original pieces, are his. Each track has text that meaningfully points to God's sovereign and sanctifying work in our lives, and arrangements that hopefully communicate those meanings. We invite you to walk through an academic year with us, experiencing the beauty of songs sung with our family in Christ.

After Princeton, we moved to Missoula, MT, Valencia, Spain, and finally Bellevue, WA. We are so happy to have musical friends in each home, and to be able to include them on this album, especially the voices of our family for the congregation on tracks one (Daniel's parents) and eleven (Katherine's parents and brothers).

Of course, we wish we could have added another album-worth of wonderful songs, like "Beauty for Ashes," "Welcome to Our World," and "All Creatures of Our God and King" (the Jamie version!). But at this point, our first recording is long overdue, and we are ready and excited to move on. The Princeton Sessions is a mashup of all our most wonderful experiences at Vespers services, and whether you are part of the Princeton community or not, we hope you enjoy re-living that time with us.
